«Passans, cette terre est libre» - Abbiamo scelto come logo la fotografia d'un autentico "Albero della Libertà" ancora vivente. È un olmo che fu piantato nel 1799 dai rivoluzionari della Repubblica Partenopea, Luigi Rossi e Gregorio Mattei, a Montepaone Superiore, paese dello Jonio catanzarese. La scritta 'passans ecc.' era qualche volta posta sotto gli "Alberi della Libertà" in Francia.

Workshop Civil Rights and Privacy
by Daniela Bas, Ph.D.
Expert in International organizations and fundamental rights
Abstract:
Quite simply we live in a technological world. When talking about civil rights and liberties, privacy may be one of the most important issues affecting the use of technology in the twenty-first century. The United Nations and the European Union as well as democratic Countries are pursuing the best resources and recommendations from the field to further efficient, comprehensive, and appropriate sharing of information. These goals will be achieved by ensuring privacy and security protections are in place throughout the information exchange process, safeguarding the safety, health, and personal data of our nations’ residents.
One of the most important challenges that communities in the European Union and in the world are currently facing is the need to find ways to combat the phenomenon of terrorism while respecting fundamental rights and the impact of counter-terrorism measures on human rights, including privacy of individuals while assuring security of the community. During the workshop the above theme will be used as a concrete example for discussion.
The workshop is so organized:
History of fundamental rights and their definitions nowadays; meaning of civil and human rights;
UN Declaration of Human Rights and EU Charta of Human Rights their and definition of privacy;
case “ terrorism, civil / human rights and privacy”;
conclusions

Paolo Brini
I have been working with digital rights since the early 1990s, when, during the "Italian crackdown," a judicial operation involving several administrators of the then-famous network nodes FidoNet, I realized how different topics were surreptitiously used to restrict freedom of expression. From the end of the 90's and early 2000s, I participated in the dissemination of open source software, development and dissemination of the GNU GPL license, and campaigns to raise awareness of Electronic Frontier Foundation on digital rights. From 2002 to 2005 I participated in the FFII campaign, which was ultimately successful, against the introduction of Software patents by the European institutions.
From 2008 I have been lobbying, in the European Parliament and in coordination with the Quadrature du Net, in defense of freedom on the Net and Neutrality of the Net, against the worst the amendments of Telecoms Package deemed dangerous to the freedom of expression and information and for the prosperity of the Internet as we know it today. Since the end of 2008 I have coordinated for Italy the OpenNet Coalition,which is present in almost all Member Countries of the European Union and consists of NGOs, lawyers, technicians, consumer associations, Internet Service Providers and activists. The coalition is particularly concentrated in the work of lobbying and raising awareness among citizens and politicians about the risks in the Telecoms Package* . From December 2008 I am also the spokesman of the Associazione Scambio Etico, an Italian company that is committed to the defense of freedom on the Net and to the adoption of global collective licensing on the model proposed in 2003 by the Electronic Frontier Foundation in order to legalize, with benefits for artists and consumers, the file sharing of copyrighted works.
To live [rarely those who lobby for the rights on the Net are paid:)], although I have a science background (Physics and IT) I have worked for about 11 years, in the the business sector of IT and telecommunications.
*Incidentally, the vote in a plenary session in Strasbourg will start at noon on May 6, during the conference
